From elsewhere ring stars often hail. In American rings, they are sometimes turned into icons -- or were. When a legendary family act from Europe previewed at Madison Square Garden in the 1920s before the press, it fell flat. Among a couple of glaring deficits, groused circus king John Ringling, "Their costumes are impossible!" Interventionist direction ensued, the act, gingerly coddled, agreed to new wardrobe, and it "arrived" big time opening night.
